Red-Winged Blackbird
(Agelaius phoeniceus)
- Notes:
- range: entirety of US, much of southern Canada heading into southernmost Alaska
- prefer wetland habitat in breeding season, wetland and drier upland grass/shrub habitat other wise
- I have only seen them in wetter areas, and weirdly, a city street
- possibly one of the most abundant land birds birds in North America
- females mottled brown with pale underside, pale sections above and below eye, and small dark red section on shoulders. males glossy black with red, orange, yellow sections on shoulders - "epaulets" - only visible when flying/displaying.

Black-Crowned Night Heron
(Nycticorax nycticorax)
- Notes:
- range: throughout the world - two subspecies: american and eurasian
- appearance:
- males and females look the same -
- Adults have black crown and back, with white plumes from back of head.
- Red eyes, gray/white body, long neck but you don't see it because it's scrunched down in the resting pose.
- Juveniles look like bitterns - white and brown streaks with yellow eyes.
- Immature BCNH's have warm gray body, dark gray crown and head, and red eyes.
